I am a wife, mother, and church leader. I have been married to my wonderful husband and Assistant Pastor, DeAndre for 27 years. We have 4 children; DeAndre Jr., Derrick, David, and finally my daughter, Alexis. Faith and family are the most important parts of my life. I am part of the worship team, head of the Sisterhood department, a youth teacher, and sisters Sunday school teacher at my church. I truly aim to glorify God in all that I do.
As a child, I always loved to draw. I would order those free art test kits from the commercial (people that grew up in the 80's will know exactly what I'm talking about, lol). I loved the process of creating something and marveling at the finished product. As I grew into my awkward, rebellious teen stage of life, drawing was no longer something I wanted to spend my time doing. I went through a melancholy, poet stage for most of my teens and early 20's and then my creative spark became smothered by the cares of life.
The year that changed so much...
The Covid-19 pandemic and shut down changed so much. April 2020, I found myself at home in quarantine with all four of my children. I had been an Ultrasound Technologist for more than 15 years and I was working at a large hospital at the time. I was on immunosuppressant therapy for autoimmune issues, so the uncertainty of the pandemic required me to be off work for several months. During that time, it seemed as if the spark of creativity was reignited in my home. My children began to film hilarious YouTube videos and I began to draw again. I put pencil to paper and my beloved six-year-old twins May and June were born. I drew the two of them and their group of friends in many different scenes and eventually wrote stories to go with them. I purchased my first iPad and Procreate and taught myself to draw digitally. I redrew my characters and eventually put my stories together into three books that I had printed via a photobook app. Eventually, I returned to work and life went back to our new semi-normal way.
Over the next few years, I discovered new areas of creativity. I began to draw custom, interpretive drawings for sale. I began to write poetry again, this time not in the "woe is me" teenager way. I created a series to encourage adolescent and teenage girls called Dare2Be and sold calendars with a different dare for each month. I held my first art show and sold original, afro-centric art. I also started a blog called A Romans 8 Heart. I hope to have links to all of these projects connected here soon.
About a year or so ago, I decided to once again redraw my characters May and June. I had learned so much about digital art and had improved greatly. My intentions were to just update their looks, but God had other plans. Once I started the process, the Lord put it on my heart to self publish and release the three books I have written so far. My goal is to honor God in everything that I do, so my prayer is that these stories will teach children Bible-based lessons about responsibility, overcoming fear, trusting God, and much more. I believe that all children can relate to and fall in love with these adorable twins, especially curly-haired, pretty, brown girls that look like them!
